It's all in the details.

Restoring the inefficiently designed 1970s apartment presented a number of challenges, particularly in navigating the layered history of the space. Working closely with KHRC, the City, and SHPO, we developed a thoughtful plan to reverse the unsympathetic 1970s alterations and restore the apartment to its original 1890s layout. This process required careful coordination to meet historic preservation standards while also adapting the space for modern use. Dividing the apartment into two functional units involved creative design solutions, including opening a new window into the alley to bring in natural light. During demolition, we uncovered and salvaged original historic trim, which added authenticity and character to the finished restoration. The project demanded a balance between preservation, code compliance, and functionality—a complex but rewarding undertaking.
