The Manhattan City Commission took final action Tuesday on a pair of consent agenda items tied to workforce housing.
Among them was the final reading of a rezoning of K-State’s Unger Complex from business commercial to high-density residential. At Tuesday’s meeting, resident Zack Doyle made one final plea to the commission to reconsider.
“To be clear, the studies I have read on this topic often cite that nearby commercial and public spaces that come with high density zones is what drives up these home values,” he said. “Where is that possible in this area? If it isn’t, then we probably won’t see the benefits that have been suggested.”
The decision clears the way for potential redevelopment of the property into a 106-unit apartment complex, targeting middle-to-moderate income residents.
Also included on the consent agenda was the final plat of Lee Mill Village, unit five, located north of the intersection of South Wreath Avenue and Oakbrook Place, in the Miller Ranch neighborhood. The land is being platted as six duplex lots and three tracts, for a future workforce housing project.
Developer Tyler Holloman, with Frontier Development, thanked commissioners for supporting the resolution.
“That is one month shy of a two-year process for us to go through and work with city staff on replatting and taking that site back from a city owned site and a liability, and repurposing it back into part of this 40-unit workforce housing development,” he said.
The site is one of three future reinvestment housing incentive district projects the company is planning in Manhattan.
