WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Two Kansas communities were awarded $50,000 each, the Kansas Department of Commerce announced on Wednesday, to boost housing.

The funding will create a total of 18 new residential units in the upper floors of downtown buildings in Seneca and El Dorado.

The grants will be used to add 13 apartments to 124 Lofts in El Dorado and add five apartments to Twin Theater in Seneca.

El Dorado’s 124 Lofts is located in the historic Masonic Lodge building. Plans to rehabilitate the landmark have been underway for about four years.

The City of El Dorado said it’s hopeful the apartments and a first-floor restaurant or retail space will help bolster economic growth downtown.

“As we continue expanding the state economy by bringing more businesses and workforce opportunities to rural communities, the need for quality and affordable housing also continues to grow,” Lt. Gov. and Commerce Secretary David Toland said in a news release. “Through the ROOMS program, we are preserving the history of our downtown districts while creating more livable spaces for current and future residents.”

The awards were funded through the Residential Opportunities On Main Street program. Last summer, the grants resulted in 29 new apartments and generated nearly $9 million in private investments.

“We’re doing our part to unlock opportunities that make our communities vibrant and full of life by adding unique, affordable housing,” Kansas Main Street Director Drew Simpson said in the release.
